Local Extremes
Local Extremes is a data reduction method that preserves the minimum and maximum values within each defined interval. This ensures that sharp peaks or drops are not lost during downsampling—making it ideal for safety-critical monitoring and capturing extreme events.
How It Works:
- The time axis is split into intervals (based on
Max Points) - For each interval, the lowest and highest value are retained
- All other points within that range are discarded
Industrial Example
Scenario: Monitoring Pressure Surges in Hydraulic Systems
In hydraulic systems, short pressure spikes can indicate valve issues or air in the system. These spikes are brief but critical.
Problem:
- Raw data updates every second
- Without extreme detection, these short spikes may be flattened or missed
Solution:

- Even short-lived peaks/dips are kept visible
- Operators can spot and react to critical system anomalies
